A recent article in the NY Times discusses how harmful it can be to a young math student when their math-anxious parents help with homework. The anxiety is contagious, and even though parents mean well, being exposed to their anxiety results in worse performance by the children.

The same logic extends to teachers–if elementary school teachers are math-phobic, as many unfortunately are, how does that affect student performance and sculpt student perception of mathematics? What can be done to counter this?
